Today, we’re diving into the magical world of WOOP goals. No, it’s not a new dance move (though it could be). WOOP stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, and Plan. It’s a super effective way to set and achieve goals without losing your sanity. So, grab your favorite beverage, get comfy, and let’s get our WOOP on!

The Mother of WHOOP

The WOOP goals method was developed by Gabriele Oettingen, a professor of psychology at New York University and the University of Hamburg. Oettingen has spent over two decades researching the science of motivation, goal setting, and self-regulation.

Her work focuses on how mental contrasting, which involves envisioning a positive future while simultaneously considering the obstacles that may arise, can significantly enhance goal achievement. This concept is at the heart of the WOOP method, which stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, and Plan.

Oettingen’s research has shown that simply fantasizing about success can actually hinder goal attainment because it tricks the brain into feeling as though the goal has already been achieved. However, when positive thinking is combined with an honest assessment of potential obstacles, it becomes a powerful tool for change. This led her to develop the WOOP method as a structured approach to help people set and achieve their goals effectively.

WOOP is grounded in rigorous scientific research and has been applied in various fields, from education and health to personal development and business. Through her work, Gabriele Oettingen has provided individuals with a practical framework to turn their aspirations into reality by addressing both the dreams and the challenges that come with them.

What’s WOOP?

WOOP is a simple yet powerful strategy to help you achieve your goals. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Wish: What do you want?
  • Outcome: What’s the best possible outcome?
  • Obstacle: What’s in your way?
  • Plan: How will you overcome it?

Think of it as your goal-setting GPS, but without the annoying “recalculating” every time you take a detour for snacks.

Step 1: Wish

First things first, what’s your heart’s desire? This is your wish. It could be anything from starting a business, losing weight, learning to play the ukulele, or finally getting through your Netflix watchlist without falling asleep.

Let’s say your wish is to get fit. Simple enough, right?

Step 2: Outcome

Now, visualize the best possible outcome. This is where you get to daydream a little. Imagine yourself rocking that little black dress or effortlessly running a 5K without wheezing like a broken accordion.

Step 3: Obstacle

Here comes the fun part: identifying your obstacles. Be honest with yourself. What’s holding you back? Is it your love affair with the snooze button? Your habit of turning into a couch potato after work? Or maybe it’s that voice in your head telling you Netflix and snacks are more important than burpees.

Your obstacle might be your tendency to hit snooze or your lack of motivation after a long day.

Step 4: Plan

Finally, create a plan to overcome those obstacles. This is your action plan, and it’s all about being practical. No need to turn into a fitness guru overnight—small, realistic steps will do the trick.

Example:

Plan to overcome your snooze-button habit by placing your alarm across the room. To tackle post-workout laziness, set out your workout clothes the night before and schedule workouts that are short and fun.

Putting WOOP Into Action

Let’s go through a WOOP goal together for something we all struggle with: keeping the house clean. Because let’s be real, nobody wants to spend their weekend cleaning up after themselves like some domestic Cinderella.

  1. Wish: I want a clean and organized house.
  2. Outcome: I feel relaxed and proud when I walk into a tidy, clutter-free home.
  3. Obstacle: I’m exhausted after work and end up binge-watching reality TV instead of cleaning.
  4. Plan: I’ll set a timer for 15 minutes each evening to tidy up one room. I’ll also reward myself with an episode of my favorite show once I’m done.

Another Example: Rocking Your Career Goals

  1. Wish: I want to get a promotion at work.
  2. Outcome: I’ll have more responsibility, a higher salary, and feel accomplished.
  3. Obstacle: I’m not proactive about seeking new projects and feel intimidated by my boss.
  4. Plan: I’ll ask for feedback on my current projects, volunteer for new assignments, and schedule a meeting with my boss to discuss my career goals.

WOOP is like having a personal cheerleader and life coach rolled into one. It helps you break down your goals into manageable steps, making them less overwhelming and more achievable. Plus, it’s a great way to stay focused and motivated because you’re always keeping your eyes on the prize—and let’s face it, who doesn’t love a good prize?
